4 days in London

As I have mentioned before in the blog, I took a couple of days off to spend a long weekend in London! I stayed at the house of one of my friends from University and, together with other great friends, we explored London! I took the Eurostar train from Brussels and in 2 hours I arrived in London. We had 4 really busy days but we managed to do loads of different things, that you can read below.

Como eu já tinha mencionado no blog anteriormente, tirei dois dias de folga para passar um fim-de-semana prolongado em Londres! Fiquei em casa de uma amiga da Universidade e, juntamente com mais outros amigos, fomos explorar Londres! Apanhei o comboio da Eurostar em Bruxelas e cheguei a Londres 2 horas depois. Tivemos 4 dias bem ocupados mas conseguimos fazer imensas coisas diferentes, que vocês podem ler abaixo. 

Day 1

Friday morning and our first stop was the Tower of London where, through the crowd, we saw the amazing installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red. This installation consists of more than 800.000 ceramic poppies, and each poppy represents a British military that died during the war. It was an amazing display!

After that, we walked to the Tower Bridge and we crossed it to the other side of the beautiful River Thames. The day was really nice, a bit windy though. We kept walking around and we got to the Borough Market, one of the largest food markets in London, with a huge variety of foods from all over the world! We had lunch there, a delicious pie with goat cheese, sweet potato and spinach! After that, we took the tube to Westminster to see the Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Then we went to see the Natural History Museum! We didn't manage to see it all, it was almost closing time, but we saw all the Dinosaurs area, which was amazing! We had dinner in a Pub nearby, called Stanhope Arms.

Sexta-feira de manhã e a nossa primeira paragem foi a Torre de Londres onde, através da multidão, vimos a fantástica instalação "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red". Esta instalação consiste em mais de 800.000 papoilas de cerâmica, e cada uma representa um militar Britânico que faleceu na guerra. Fantástica exposição.

Depois, caminhámos até à Tower Bridge e atravessámos para o lado de lá do Rio Tamisa. O dia esteve bastante bom, embora um pouco ventoso. Continuámos a caminhar e chegámos ao Borough Market, um dos maiores mercados de comida em Londres, com uma enorme variedade de comida de todo o mundo! Almoçámos ali, comi uma deliciosa tarte com queijo de cabra, batata-doce e espinafres! Depois do almoço, fomos de metro até Westminster para ver o Big Ben e as Casas do Parlamento. Em seguida, fomos visitar o Museu de História Natural! Não conseguimos ver tudo, era quase hora de fechar, mas vimos toda a área dos Dinossauros e foi genial! Jantámos num Pub ali perto, chamado Stanhope Arms.

Day 2

Saturday morning we went to Notting Hill to see the Portobello Market. There were hundreds of antique shops and stalls with different products, from second hand items, fashion, fruits and vegetables, food to take away. It was very nice despite the little raindrops falling! It's a very pleasant area, with lovely houses and colourful doors! We kept walking in the Portobello road and we stoped for lunch in Pizza East. It was a bit full, we had to wait for a table, but the food was really good so it was worth the wait. 

After lunch, we went to the Shoreditch area and we visited the Spitafields Market and all the surrounding area. Caught in the rain, we headed to The Breakfast Club for an earlier dinner. It was delicious... It's definitely a great place to go for a meal and they have different spots in London, you can choose the one closest to you! I had a salad wrap with grilled haloumi, tomatoes, houmous, spinach, plus french fries.

Sábado de manhã fomos até Notting Hill para ver o Mercado de Portobello. Havia centenas de lojas de antiguidades e bancadas com diferentes produtos, desde artigos em segunda mão, moda, fruta e legumes, comida para levar. Foi muito agradável, apesar das gotinhas de chuva a cair! É uma área muito tranquila, com casas amorosas e portas coloridas! Continuámos a andar na Portobello Road e parámos para almoçar na Pizza East. Estava um bocado cheio e tivemos de esperar para ter uma mesa, mas a comida estava deliciosa, por isso valeu a pena a espera.

Depois do almoço, fomos até à área de Shoreditch e visitámos o Spitafields Market e toda a área à volta. Apanhadas pela chuva, fomos até ao The Breakfast Club para jantarmos mais cedo. Estava delicioso... É sem dúvida um belo sítio onde ir comer e eles têm diferentes espaços em Londres, pelo que se pode escolher o que esteja mais perto! Eu comi um wrap com salada, haloumi grelhado, tomates, houmous, espinafres e batatas fritas a acompanhar.

Day 3

Sunday Morning was spent in the Market of Camden Town. It's one of the most popular attractions in London. There are so many different stalls selling crafts, clothing, food, books, jewelry... a huge variety of things! It's so big... There is a large selection of fast food stalls, where we chose to eat a delicious Turkey wrap with haloumi, falafel, houmous and salad! We sat and ate by the canal, enjoying the gorgeous warm and sunny day! After, we continued our stroll through the Stables Market, with loads of clothes stalls, furniture, antiques and more alternative items for every culture and fashion style.

After visiting Camden, we went to Covent Garden. There are so many different things going on, from independent shops, markets, beautiful buildings, theatres and Museums. From there, we went to Chinatown where we had dinner, followed by an amazing and exaggerated ice cream in Häagen-Dazs. It was the perfect ending of another busy day!

A manhã de Domingo foi passada no Mercado de Camden Town. É uma das maiores atracções de Londres. Há tantas bancadas diferentes, onde se vende artesanato, roupas, comida, livros, joalharia... uma quantidade enorme de coisas! É tão grande... Há uma enorme selecção de bancadas de comida rápida, e nós escolhemos comer um delicioso wrap Turco com haloumi, falafel, houmous e salada! Sentámo-nos a comer ao longo do canal, disfrutando do dia quente e ensolarado! Depois, continuámos o nosso passeio pelos Stables Market, com imensas bancadas de roupas, mobília, antiguidades e imensos artigos mais alternativos para todas as culturas e estilos de moda.

Depois de visitarmos Camden, fomos até Covent Garden. Ali há tantas coisas a acontecer, desde lojas independentes, mercados, edifícios lindos, teatros e museus. Dali fomos até Chinatown, onde comemos o nosso jantar, seguido de um fantástico e exagerado gelado na Häagen-Dazs. Foi o final perfeito de mais um dia bem ocupado!

Day 4

Monday, my last day in London... I had my train back at 18h, so we had to enjoy our morning and afternoon before it was time to head back to St.Pancras to take the train. We went to visit the Imperial War Museum. It was founded with the intention to record the military effort of Britain during the First World War. Since then, the Museum grew and expanded, including now all conflicts in which Britain have been involved. It was very interesting to understand better the whole history of the Wars and the experience people had during wartime. They kept so many things, from vehicules, weapons, letters, uniforms... It's a very interesting Museum to visit, and it's free, so there's no excuse not to go. 

In front of the Museum there is a cute little Pub called Grand Union, where we had lunch and chat before I had to go back to Brussels.

Segunda-feira, o meu último dia em Londres... O meu comboio de volta era às 18h, por isso tivemos de aproveitar a manhã e a tarde antes de ser horas de voltar para St.Pancras para apanhar o comboio. Fomos visitar o Imperial War Museum. Foi fundado com a intenção de registar todo o esforço dos militares Britânicos durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Desde então, o Museu tem vindo a crescer e expandiu-se, incluindo agora todos os conflitos nos quais a Grã-Bretanha esteve envolvida. Foi bastante interessante entender melhor toda a história das Guerras e a experiência das pessoas durante o tempo de Guerra. Eles guardaram tantas coisas, desde viaturas, armas, cartas, uniformes... É um Museu muito interessante para visitar, e é grátis, por isso não há desculpa para não ir lá.

Em frente ao museu, há um pequeno e amoroso Pub chamado Grand Union, onde fomos almoçar e conversar antes de eu voltar para Bruxelas.

I had such a lovely time with my friends, and I managed to see other friends that I haven't seen for ages and met new people! I saw so many things, though there are still loads of things to discover in London. I feel lucky to be where I am now and being able to easily go to places and visit old friends. Right now, I have lots of work to do and my next and final trip planned for this year is to Portugal, to spend Christmas at home close to my beloved family!

Passei óptimos momentos com as minhas amigas, e consegui ver outros amigos que já não via há séculos e conheci pessoas novas! Vi tanta coisa, apesar de haver ainda muito mais para descobrir em Londres. Sinto-me com sorte por estar onde estou agora e poder ir facilmente a sítios e visitar velhos amigos. Agora, tenho imenso trabalho para fazer e a minha próxima e última viagem agendada para este ano é a Portugal, para passar o Natal em casa perto da minha família adorada!
